Poland, Auschwitz is the German name for the place. Auschwitz was a death camp and not a concentration camp. People went there for extermination, well by the end of the war, they didn't go there to work, hence concentration. Auschwitz originally was a camp for political prisoners and not an extermination camp. Socialists and other political enemies were rounded up and sent there. Later on it became the centre of death that it is infamous for. As Hitler was loosing the war he wanted to win the war against Jewry. Hence the rise in slaughter.

I agree with teddy's historical facts, and Auschwitz is in nowaday's Poland. But then, it was within the borders of the German Reich. So it depends on which time in history you refer to.

The maybe darkest hour in the history of the Auschwitz concentration camp was when the Nazis sent prisoners on a death march into Germany, where again thousands died before the Russian army could finally invade.

As a German, there are a few things about WWII I never understood. Why did they scarifice such a lot of people of their own "Arian" folk? And, does mass madness coincide with mass murder? Why did the people from my neighbor village lock their Nazi mayor into his own cellar and would guard them with their arms until the Americans marched in? As my grannys told me (and I believe them) there were lots of such scenes happening. But they hoisted white flags all around.

And there were many people in Germany who helped Jews. "Schindler's List" dramatizes it, but there were many, many more. A lot of them didn't live to tell, but even in my small village, I know one or two who survived. One was caught, and was exterminated at Dachau, together with the Jewish family he hid.

Talking about Dachau, and Auschwitz, these two towns still exist, and are quite normal pretty little towns in their respective countries. But, probably, you shouldn't do what a friend of mine did: He went to the USA with a VISA credit card issued by the "Sparkasse Dachau". He really didn't think about it, actually, but he phoned back home and had a new one sent, issued by "Sparkasse Munich".

Was, Was in poland.
