Playa Del Carmen or Dominican Republic? What resort is best?

Planning a vacation for my husband and I the week after Thanksgiving.

Of course, the Dominican Republic is a good scale country with a plethora of resorts. However, as a generalization, most are self contained, all inclusive resorts with little contact or activities outside of their compounds, beaches and golf courses.
On the other hand, I would definitely recommend Playa del Carmen on the 'Mexican Riviera'. There is the rich and traditional Mexican culture, cuisine and history to enjoy in addition to the traditional holiday activities. The Yucatan is the most laid back, friendly & safest part of Mexico with a rich Mayan culture including spectacular pyramids, antiquities and nature reserves to visit.
I would check it out as the more fascinating, varied and enjoyable destination.

i have been to DR 2x both times i didnt like it went to two different areas also mexico would be a better choice the beaches are better there and the food as well and one more thing the hotels are nicer in mexico

I've only been to Playa del Carmen and absolutely loved it. It's not the young american crowd from Cancun, you'll see more european tourists there and of course the local and many, many native indians-usually working in the hotels. The waters are a beautiful turquoise and if you like archaelogical ruins, the great Chichen Itza is about 3 hours away, there's also a large water park near, Xcaret, Tulum, and so many more things to do and see.

I like dthat Playa del Carmen was small, a small cute town, so you would rarely get lost and on 5th avenue you can find everything. I could of spent a whole day just walking, shopping, eating etc.

I'm sure the Dominican Republic is beautiful as well, but I can only speak of Playa for now.

I just returned from the dominican republic. We booked a honeymoon through apple and stayed at secrets excellence resort in punta cana. the beach and resort are great and there are NO KIDS. Goto an apple vacations rep and look into it.
