Playa del Carmen, Mexico - hurricaines?

My friend & I might be moving from Canada to Playa del Carmen for a year to work at a resort (hopefully Riu). We are looking forward to meeting new people, the cultural change, practicing our Spanish & especially the warm climate. Our main concern is hurricaine season - what do you do & where do you go when there is a hurricaine? Do the resorts provide for you or are you on your own? It's a huge decision to move so what do we need to know prior to pursuing this move & any helpful advice would be appreciated! Or does anyone recommend another Riu Resort with an incredible staff, where it's warm & sunny year round & we can practice our Spanish with low risk of hurricaines then that would be great too!

WOW! That is a huge change of life decision...I would have a serious conversation with the human resources department at the resort and have your questions answered by them in writing. Due to the fact that you will not be a citizen of Mexico you should investigate your rights when in the country. I might also vacation there again before your move and talk with people that work in the resorts. Find out their stories...it might be especially helpful to find someone that worked during the hurricane season last year. Just by media coverage it looked pretty scary after Wilma last year.
In summary...RESEARCH, GET IT IN WRITING, HAVE A SECONDARY PLAN (in case you get dooped!)
Good Luck!
