How do I thrive in the Phoenix summer heat?

I may accept a job in Phoenix, but I am coming from one of the most temperate locations on earth where the daily highs are between 60 - 75 degrees ALL year.

What are some things you long-time residents have learned over the years for having a good life during the hot months?

What are smart things to do with the home, the car, planning your day, dressing, etc?

Stay indoors during the summer months. Plan any outdoor activities for early morning or late evening. Make sure you have water with you at all times.

It's really not that bad. Most festival and stuff are in the cooler months, so for the hottest months (June, July, and August) there are not a lot os outdoor stuff going on. There's plenty to do indoors, though. Baseball, basketball, hockey.

You'll learn that finding a parking spot close to the entrance is not as important as finding one under some shade.

Whenever you can drive up to Sedona or Flagstaff for the weekend. It is really nice up there, not too far of a drive, and it's usually cooler there.

Good Luck!

I lived in Phoenix 2 years, coming from NYS,
first thing, always, always carry water with you in the hottest part of spring, and summer.
In reality, being a dry climate, you should keep yourself filled with fluids, non sweeted non soda fluids. Your skin will allow all moisture to escape by sweating eyc.
It is dangerous to not sweat, as then you might be heading for heat stroke, which can be fatal.

Water! is a must in Phoenix

It's best to live with air conditioning in your home and car. Covered parking is an absolute must have!! Most all places have a/c and can get chilly. I grew up there and am or was somewhat used to the heat, but being out in it is very draining. I used to hike a mountain in the mornings, but for a couple months it's too hot, even at 5am. There are people who run, bike, play golf, tennis and walk in the heat, but it takes a certain getting used too. It is much dryer there than most places so to some that feels a little cooler.
It's pretty casual there so shorts and sandals will help you stay cool.
Keeping your blinds and curtains closed during the day will help keep the heat out, but utilities are going to be high. Having it nice and cool inside is going to cost you. But there are also many months of absolutely gorgeous weather, and your only an hours drive from cooler temps. AZ has some nice areas to escape to. Lot's of Zonie's go to Southern California during the summer months, which is less than a 6 hour drive or one hour flight away.
No getting around the heat in the summer, but people have survived it for years, even without a/c. Drink lots of water and always have some with you on the road!!
But why would you want to leave somewhere that is nice all year? Phoenix has become to me a very dangerous city, crime is bad there, it's overpriced, polluted with many days of bad air advisories during cooler months. Wages are lower and you will pay more for car insurance, registration and utilities. Housing prices have gotten beyond affordable and traffic sucks. Public transit is almost non existant considering the size of the city.

Light colored white clothes and LOTS of water. Get a white car with tinted windows, with a remote start so the car will be cool when you get into it.
