Why is Sicily So Filthy?

Why is it that Sicily is so dirty, the streets are covered with garbage, and every one you talk to tries to rip you off. Why are Sicilians so proud of the dump they live in? Its so trashed its rediculous, old washing machines on the side of the road, and junk cars at the end of every dead end street. The people all the way from the parking guys to the restaurant owners try to rip you off.

Why is sicily so full of littering scum bags?

I dont know what these people were talking about, like the guy who lived there for 5 years and never so any trash, or the lady saying she didnt see trash in the pictures. Why would they show that in a tourist brochure? Well the reason is that people just dont care, and the are undereducated on littering. Also there is no LITTER LAW with 1000 dollar tickets like in America... Tourist lady.... Thats why it looks like that. Also the rip off thing, I think they are born with it. I call it the "Sicilian Screw"

Sicily, first of all is beautiful and to think otherwise is retarded. Second, if Sicily has any downfalls it's because of the Mafia and the Italian government. Much of the money that would go to improving Sicily lines the pockets of the "mafiusi" and dirty politicians. It's very sad. Report It

The "Sicilian screw" as you call it, is a part of Mediterranean culture. Sicilian people are amazing and very warm people, but like most Europeans and humans in general, they will try to get the best of you. However, it's your own fault if you allow yourself to get screwed. Smarten up. Report It

not all of sicily is dirty. mafia live in sicily, and they dont live in the poor part. i know i been to sicily and i loved it. also many people would probably like to move from there and can't. about ripping you off, yes they tried that on me also. its the way they are. some of them.

I've seen many beautiful pictures of Sicily and have read lots of reviews from travelers and not one picture or one reviewer has ever mentioned what you have . It does make one wonder -IF you were really there-WHY a tourist would seek out an undesirable area..IF that's what you did. People in America do put trash out to the curb , on trash pick-up day . What do you do with yours?You can also get ripped off anywhere .
Another thing-most people planning a trip , even if it's just across the USA-by doing some research on the destination. I just think your question is an attempt to be negative , for whatever reason .

Sicily is not DIRTY. Actually it's a beautiful place to visit. It has gorgeous beaches and the scenery is outstanding. The cities are rich with culture and history. You got ripped off cause "Us Sicilians can see a fool from a mile away."
