How easy is travel from palermo to stromboli or etna without a car and are there cheap campsites in the area? I live in Sicily and I will tell you what I know. The train service will get you to Catania, but from there it is nearly impossible to get to the top of Etna without a car. Its about a 25-40 km walk from downtown catania. You will need a car, but there are some cheap places like volcano car rental that you can find something. Stromboli will require you to take a ferry from Messina, well actually Milazzo, and its the last island. There is some camping there but I found better camping at a better price in Lipari, same group of islands just a little bigger. You can rent a scooter there for like 20 euro a day and get all around it has a pop of about 4500 people. Camping there costs 12 euro per day. The bus service, taxi service and trains all suck in Sicily, they are late and the taxis will rip you off so bad, I would never even think about getting in one. Look if you are smart travel to catania then take a bus to Motta St. Anastasia, from there you will probably be able to meet tons of Americans (there is a base 10 km away) maybe you can ask a military guy to take you up there. stromboli is an island, u will need to use a boat not a car You might find some help on these sites: Like the other question said the train service to Catania is very good. There are also plenty of buses into the area. Once in Catania it would probably be easier to get ona tour of sorts to get to the top of Etna. There is a local us that runs to the point on Etna where there are tons of little junk stores but it is almost not worth it. Grab a decent tour and it will be great. |
