My sons passport just arrived, but his birth certificate wasn't with it. does it get mailed separately?

my son is 18 months old, we had to mail in his birth certificate with the passport application, we received his passport but not his birth certificate back.

Hey don't worry. Sometimes the passport comes with the birth certificate and other times they will mail it a couple of days later. The same thing happened to my sister, she got birth certificate 3 days after her passport arrived. But if you don't get it within a month go ahead and call them up.
