How to move internationally?

I'm considering a move from the US to England. Where do I start? I am a British citizen, my husband is not. Do I get a job and housing before I move or find it when I get there? What things should I bring with me and what should I sell before we go (i.e. computers, furniture, clothes)?

I moved from the US to the UK straight after university, so I faced a similar challenge. Here's what I learned...

If you can, unless you are sure you want to go AND have plenty of money, get a job before you make the move. While in the US, I called everyone I could think of and applied to all the companies in my field. Then I planned a week-long trip to the UK for interviews, calling all the companies and asking to meet with them. I got a pretty good job in the end.

In terms of housing, I think it depends on whether you can comfortably stay with family or at a hotel while you're looking. Doing that would give you some flexibility.

Alternatively, you could take a place sight-unseen. I did that when I moved back to the US, but I only considered large apartment complexes that had lots of pictures and reviews. I don't think there are very many of those.

Bring clothes, they don't like naked people at the airport. =) But seriously, bring anything you want to have. One thing to keep in mind is that most rentals in the UK are furnished. So if you plan to rent, you should probably get rid of most if not all furniture.

Also, everything is much cheaper in the US than the UK, so stock up while you're here. And take the tags off before you pack, otherwise customs may charge you. ("Used" items are not subject to import duty.)

Good luck!
