Packing electronic devices?

They always say try to pack electronic devices in your carrier, not checked baggage.
Is there a good reason for that?

I really need to keep some stuffs at hand and carrying epilator and all other electronic devices don't leave much room in my backpack.

Advices? tips?

I only bring my laptop with me through security because you never know how the baggage handlers take care of your bags. Everything else I check, such as camera, video camera and other battery operated devices, however in Jan of 2008 US got a new law that involves batteries and I would go to their websites to read about this new regulation.

Before we had digital cameras they didn't want us to check it because they x-ray it and the film would get ruined but that don't have these days because it is digital. No real reason these days to carry everything with you though.
