The river was an important trade route for the Algonquin people, who called it Kitchissippi, "Great River".
In 1615, Samuel de Champlain and 脡tienne Br没l茅, assisted by Algonquin guides, were the first Europeans to travel up the Ottawa River and follow the water route west to Georgian Bay that was to be used by French fur traders for the following two centuries.

The river has been there since the dawn of time. However, the first Europeans discovered it in the early 1600s.
