What is the situation for tourists in Oaxaca right now?

my friend that lives in Oaxaca is in Houston for a while got to us. sat. came to see me 9-17-06 said anything could happen in Oaxaca he came on the bus no problems the larger cities are the prob. area he said most other areas are OK. Oaxaca is some what tense some other friends expat. moved from Oaxaca till it is over. if i want to go to Mexico i wouldn't let this stop me.

I think everyone is still on strike or perhaps just starting to return to work. It will take a long time to get everything back in order.

Hi,

You dont want to go to Oaxaca City. There have been many disturbances, highway blockades, supermarkets are running short on food due to these same blockades.

Beyond Oaxaca City, the pacific Coast there is no problem. My brother lives there so you can trust me. If you are going to the coast I suggest you travell via Acapulco (if coming from the north) or Salina Cruz (coming from the south).

Have a great trip!

Oh yeah, bad stuff happening. The teachers are not only still on strike but the keep seizing the police stations, administration buildings, terrorizing the streets, beating the police. Its anarchy. The federal government has let this escalate for months without lifting a finger. The population of Oaxaca is pleading desperately for an end to the chaos and violence to no avail.

That is only actually in Oaxaca city and environs, but all the highways are periodically blocked, in and out.

(if you are planning to fly into Huatulco, Puerto Angel or Puerto Escondido, don't worry, there are no protests, road blocks or violence in those tourist areas, just around the city of Oaxaca, and Oaxaca State is a BIG state)

Well, though the situation is tense as other have said, there are many other places in Oaxaca that you can visit. I suggest you travel there, just keep a low profile and try not to get involved with the problem.

Tourist are respected in Mexico, and they are free to travel around with no problems.
