Any alternative to thanksgiving in oaxaca in view of the situation?

Oaxaca's rich past and present culture, food and beaches....is there anything else like it? Chiapas?

The problem is only in the downtown of oaxaca city, but it is not dangerous to walk around. There are not riots or violence.
But if you want to avoid this. Oaxaca still offers you a plenty of options: You can visit archeological ruins such as Monte Alban, Mitla. You can visit the beaches (huatulco, puerto escondido), visit beautiful landscapes and have a great dinner in many of the cities of oaxaca such as el tule, huajuapan, etla, etc.

Bottom line: Oaxaca has a lot to offer. You will not regret to visit it

The troubles are in the city of Oaxaca and have not effect on the coast which is several hours away via a long winding mountain route.

San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, like Oaxaca
鈥?is among the eight towns in Mexico with a 3 star rating by Michelin,
鈥?is one of the two cities with the strongest indigenoius presence,
鈥?can be used for a base to visit one of the six 3 star archeological site, the two, Monte Alban and Palanque, with the most specatular locations of any ruin Mexico. Okay, the location of the ruins in Tulum are up there, but the ruins themselves aren't.

There of course are differences. Monte Alban is very close to Oaxaca; Palenque is five hours from SCdC. The architecture of Oaxaca is more notable.

Chiapas is gorgeous, it has everything you are looking for, plus great ecoturism.

I would also suggest Merida, San Miguel de Allende or Guanajuato (they don't have beaches but are gorgeous) or the Riviera Maya.

Hope this helped!

Unfortunately Oaxaca is not a good idea now. You can go to Chiapas, Chichen Itza, Tulum, Uxmal, La Venta, Palenque..
All are beautiful..
