What's the latest news on the violent protests in Oaxaca, Mexico?

Is it now safe to travel to Oaxaca?

Federal agents have arrested one of the main leaders of the violent protests in Oaxaca State in a signal that the new administration of President Felipe Calder贸n will take a firmer hand in dealing with civil unrest than his predecessor, Vicente Fox. The arrest of Flavio Sosa Villavicencio, left, the leader of the New Left movement and a key player in the Oaxaca People鈥檚 Popular Assembly, came after he held a news conference in Mexico City late Monday evening. It capped a week in which the federal authorities had detained more than 130 of the protesters in Oaxaca and shipped them to maximum-security prisons around the country. The federal police also imposed a ban on marches. Since then, an uneasy peace has settled on the southern colonial city, after months of civil strife between the government and leftists calling for the governor to resign. At least 13 people have been killed, dozens have been injured in protests and colonial landmarks have been defaced or burned.

It calmed down there around November. Check out this news blog, it is written by an independent journalist living in Oaxaca and will catch you up on the current events in that city;

This is from April 24, 2007. Rainier's story is from Dec., 2006.

Go to the US Dept of State web site. They give advisories of which areas to avoid. For now, I'm staying away from Oaxaca.
