Is Oaxaca a safe vacation destination yet?

Is there still occasional violence in the streets?

Oaxaca City. I figured the protests would be over by now...

Friends of mine traveled there about four months ago when it was supposedly somewhat dangerous. They had no issues and they are intrepid walkers, especially in the zocalo and mercado areas. They are heading back to Mexico this month.

Yes easpeacialy with the protest of the teachers it also depends what part of Oaxaca your going

The last time I checked the Dept of State web site, there were still protests going on. If you decide to go, travel with caution.

Yes, don't sweat it. Protests and violence are over. Of course if you go out at night in a lonley alley, something can happen to you, but if you stick to the tourist areas and take general precautions (no showing around) you will be find.
