Back on MX 190 into Oaxaca Ride a donkey! Fly from Cancun to Mexico City and then to Oaxaca city. Roads in South Mexico are really really poor. It depends on the time you have.
The fastest way (and expensive) is going to Cancun and taking a flight to Oaxaca (two companies offer one)
By bus: take a bus from Playa del Carmen to Villahermosa and from there to Oaxaca. The first one goes every hour o so and the second one goes twice a day.
By car: Take south towards Chetumal, cross the Yucatan peninsula towards Campeche, from there passing Villahermosa go up to Minatitlan cross the Tehuantepec Istmus to the Pacific (Salina Cruz) and from there to Oaxaca.
The roads are in very good shape but it will take you arround 20 hours straight driving. The landscape you will cross is amazing. i think it will be better to take a flight from playa del carmen to mexico... like one of the people from above said... our roads in south mexico are poor.... but not too poor :)
keep in mind that oaxaca has 3 airports, so you can go anywhere if you want to arrive at puerto escondido, popular with tourists, HUATULCO a nice resort area or OAXACA city.
