Do you need a passport to go to Niagara Falls?

Do you need one if you are a United States Citizen? We are going summer of 08' so I would like to know soon.

Yes you need a passport to cross the Canada-U.S. border as of January 2008

According to US officials, as of Jan 1, 2008, any person entering the US by land, sea or air, will need a US passport.So you won't need a passport to get into Canada, if you have sufficient ID (including picture ID and a birth certificate or citizenship certificate) but you will need a passport to get back into the US. Even if you are a
US citizen.

If you are a US citizen, you can still go to Niagara Falls (New York side) anytime

But to go to Niagara Falls (Ontario side) according to US Customs and Border Patrol, they will want everyone coming in (or coming back in) to USA to have a passport as of Summer 2008. That is when the full Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative comes into effect.

Latest news from the press releases on their website says June 2008 is the last time you can expect to cross by LAND or WATER with just a birth certificate and photo ID. As of September 2007, you already need a passport to enter the US by AIR travel.

My advice: Get the passport now so you don't have to cancel or postpone the trip.
