Why do we all want sunderland to do better than newcastle, do we hate them that much?

I can remember watching Sunderland play and win the Cup. Can't remember which Cup but it's the only football game I can remember watching and enjoying. That was back in 1973 or something. I can remember them carrying a dark haired man with a moustache about on their shoulders after the match. Know anything about that?
