NYC questions?

Hey it looks like we are moving to NYC! I have a few questions to people who live there or have lived there.

1. My husband is a Manager of a retail store.. he gets paid about 40,000 dollars now ( We live in OR) since rent is so high there, do people tend to get paid more?

2. Are the cheaper apartments really bad to live in? I am talking about less then 1000 a month.

3. What is the city life like?

4. Is there really lots of opportunity there...(especially in music)?

Oh and we are in are 20's if that makes a dif.

THANKS :)

1. Yes, you will earn more. the avg. wages in NYC amount to 25% greater than most tier 3 cities.
2. DO not live in an apt. under 1000/month anywhere near the city. They are roach infested. If you wish to live on 1000/month rent a sublet or a share with someone. Or perhaps a private apt in someone's home outside the city in Queens, or Jersey City, 15 minute trip away.
3. NYC is everything you want it to be. A different country every day, a different concert, play, show, sight every day. The things you see here you will see noplace esle in this world. I moved here 9 years ago from canada and can't leave,
4. I'm also a musician...there are TONS of opportunities here.

Good luck and feel free to contact me via email if you'd like more info.

1)If you earned $40K in Portland, Or you are going to need to make $71K if you want to live in Manhattan or $51K if you want to live in Queens.

2) A one bedroom in Queens, in an "OK" neighborhood will go for about $1k a month.
3)If you are coming from the sticks, city life will be a shock. If you are coming from Chicago, NYC will only take a little bit of adaptation.
4)Opportunity in music how? Are you a classically trained in the oboe? Or do you mean you want to work in the Virgin Megastore?

1. I don't know.
2. Yes, Brooklyn, Nassau County, and some neighbors are cheap, often bad condition. In NJ, flood can damage houses in Staten Island, Nassau County, and NJ near shoreline.
3. It is exciting place because used 24-hour just like Neon Town in POKEMON WORLD!!, however some NYers are impatient.
4. Yes, there are many places to do. Join tour by foot, friends, by tour bus, by mass transit. You could also go on cruise around NY. Also, there are Urban Park Ranger program who host program like camping, hiking, birdwatching at various parks.
In September, Hudson Valley will have Hudson Ferry-Go-Around where you could enjoy ferry ride on beautiful and scenic Hudson River Valley.
There are many museums, attractions, and many more, including Broadway Musical/PLAY, Avenue Q in Brooklyn, etc!!
Also, there are three Amusement Park in NY.
Two amuseument Parks are at Coney Island, Brooklyn and other is at Playland, Rye, NY.
There are many shopping malls in NY area.

I hope you could enjoy to live in NYC!!

1) Yes. Here in NYC, the average salary is about $50,000

2) It depends on what neighborhood you live in. You can't really find much apartments for less than $1,000 but it can be possible.

3) You have to be used to the noises outside because everyone is so close to each other, you can hear people talk from across the street.

4) Yes but it's kind of hard. I don't know about music but I'm sure there are opportunities because there are huge record companies in NYC.

Good luck!

I'm a native NY'r, from Manhattan. The quick answers are:

1. Yes, the COL is higher here so salaries tend to be higher across the board.
2. You won't find a place in Manhattan for less than $1k/mo unless you don't mind living in a shoe box, approx 250 sq ft (really, no kidding), in a walk up. The outer boros (Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn) will have less expensive places for rent.
3. City life - can't be beat! I used to travel all the time and never encounterd a city that has as much as this one has, the pace is VERY fast though, you need to ramp up or you'll be overwhelmed easily.
4. Opportunities abound here, but realize that the competition is that much more intense.

Feel free to contact me here, I can email chat w/you if you wish to answer any more questions or go into detail re: the above.

Retail store managers in NYC would expect to make more in NYC, depending of course on the size of the store and amount of business.
There are few apartments in Manhattan for under $1K that you would be willing to live in. The few that exist become available only when the current occupant dies. You can find acceptable apartments below $1K in the outer boroughs with some effort. In the Bronx, try Parkchester. In Brooklyn, Flatbush. In Queens, Astoria or Sunnyside. On Staten Island, Silver Lake or Grymes Hill.
Life is more crowded with people, nights are noisier, shopping offers far more options and convenience.
Musical opportunities depend upon how you get to Carnegie Hall (old joke).
You're young and hopefully still flexible, which does make a dif.

1. He will probably make more money in NYC...but I would look into just HOW much more he'll actually be making.

2. There really aren't any apartments in Manhattan for less than $1000 that you would want to live in, or could live in without ultimately killing each other or divorcing. For $1000 you will have one, very, very small room. You can find nicer places in Queens or Nassau County within your budget (Look into Astoria...)

3. City life is very fast paced and exciting.

4. Of course there is a lot of opportunity...but there is also tons of people like you that move into the city looking for those opportunities... So there's TONS of competition!

NYC is the 2nd most expensive city in the world.
i live 45 mins. away and it is still very expensive here.
your probably not going to get payed a ton, because its a city, there is tons of people. your def. not going to need a car. parking in the city is EXTREMELY expensive. but taxi's add up too. take the subway to work or try to walk.

cheap apartments will be "in the ghetto". in crime areas. there are certain places you don't want to go during night (just like any major city) because of crime and such.

i personally hate NY, i live here and im moving as soon as graduate. i wouldn't recommend anyone living here or NYC. it is very dirty. there is a lot to do in the city. people aren't friendly ingeneral, but you will find some nice people. its more of a look out for yourself type of city/state.

i would say if you have experience in music, there is an okay shot for opportunity here. but for music chicago is better. and since it is a city more people, only a certain amount of job. many people live paycheck to paycheck and have to live a MUCH cheaper life in NYC. because everything is atleast 2 times more expensive.

if your in your 20s i would say work at a bar or a fancy restaurant just to get a little more money. and start saving NOW! i would visit NYC, before moving here. just so you can see how it is. if you have kids, you don't send them to public school. some areas are really bad.

no

depends on the borough

a lot of parties in manhattan, but quiet in queens, brooklyn, ect.

not really if ur talking about job opportunities.

however the education is pretty good
