Binghamton to NYC?

I am traveling to Binghamton, New York to NYC. I want to drive in as far as I can in that direction and take a metro or a train into the city. I want to drive as close as I can without getting into the city. Any information would be helpful.

I've done that drive many, many, many times (went to college in Binghamton). You're best bet is to drive down 17 to 87 and grab a MetroNorth train - park at whatever station you want. If staying an extended period of time, the train station in Poughkeepsie (Rt 17 to Liberty, 55 to New Paltz to Poughkeepsie) has a parking garage with 24-7 security. MetroNorth goes right into Grand Central. You can do the same with New Jersey transit, but not all stations have parking and I find MetroNorth to be quicker. Try Tarrytown if you don't care about the parking security. Check the Metronorth website for directions.

Drive from Binghamton to Port Jervis, NY. Once in Port Jervis, park your car at the Port Jervis train station and take the NJT/Metro-North's Port Jervis Line from there to Hoboken. Once in Hoboken, you can take the PATH Train to New York City.

If you prefer to go to New York City, take the same train from Port Jervis to Secaucus Junction and transfer to any New York City-bound NJ Transit train to Penn Station New York.

The fare from Port Jervis to Hoboken: $14.25 one way peak/$21.50 off peak round trip.

The fare from Port Jervis to NYC via Secaucus Junction :$16.50 one way peak/$25.00 off peak round trip.

I hope this information is very helpful. Good luck and happy travels.

I've been on that Port Jervis train...that ride takes FOREVER. You'd be better off driving through Pennsylania on I-81, connect to I-84 in Scranton to I-380. Get on I-80 eastbound into New Jersey and get onto I-95 south for the Lincoln Tunnel exit (17 - Route 495). HOWEVER, at the very last exit (Weehawken/Hoboken) get out and stay to your right. Make a right at the end (JFK Blvd East) and you will drive alongside the Lincoln Tunnel roadway but not in it. You then go over a bridge and you will be in Hoboken. Make a left onto 14th Street and then a right on Hudson Street. By 2nd Street there will be a couple of parking garages (depending on how long you stay it could cost $20). Park your car there and then walk to the PATH station in Hoboken (just down Hudson Street, make an immediate left.) Take the 33rd Street PATH train ($1.50) fare and you are in NYC.
