Are there Hostels in Morocco????

hi all,

i am planning a trip to Morocco later this month, before christmas.

i want to go to 3 places in Morocco, they are Tanger, Fes and Marrakech.

i m going alone, is there any youth hostel in this 3 cities? if there isn't any, what is the best option? i guess i cant really book them online? do i just walk in?

what kind of currency do they take? do they take euro too?

thank you.

There are none in Tangier and Fes (asked wife who is from Morocco). There are some to be found in Marrakech but hotels are SO inexpensive this time of year, there really is no reason to stay in a hostel.

As for the question that was not answered above...

the best option is to find hotels when you are there... except for Marrakech, this is the off-season and you can (and are expected to) negotiate for great rates on hotels.

All currency is the Dirham when it comes to paying for hotel. No Euro. In the souks they use Dirham, Franc, and Rials (it can be confusing if you don't know what you are doing).

Exchange your money IN MOROCCO at the bank (I found that one bank right beside another has wildly different exchanges and they fluctuate daily). Additionally, the posted exchange (the board with lights on it) can be weeks old. Go to the counter and ask for today's exchange sheet. Shop around to get the best rates.

kjm,

Lucky you.X

Do you mean Hotels. Well, there are a lot of hotels with a cheap price too, you don't need a reservation, you can just walk in, and they will give you a room. Act like you've been in Morocco before and that you know things, you actually choosed a beautiful cities, with many features.

I don't think there are any. If a city has them maybe Tangier.
The thing with a hostel is the appearance it may have, whether accurate or not, and it seems to me that would be reason enough for the govt. to not allow them.
I am gonna ask around and may come back and edit this.

Javelot~ He does mean HOSTEL not hotel. It's 2 different things.

www.travellerspoint.com LOTS of hostels and budget hotels.

there are hotels everywhere in these 3 cities, just when you arrive call a taxi to take you to a hotel, there is no troubles for walk-in in hotels. you can just go to a hotel and ask if they have a room for you.
For the money bring Euro; you can exchange it to DH in any bank on your way.

Good luck

It does, I have read about them but don't know where they are -- sorry.

Sarah- what appearance does a hostel have? I've been in them (not in Morocco) and they were fine, better than many hotels/motels. My husband has never heard anything bad about them and neither has another Moroccan I have spoken with recently though some other girl I talked to seemed to think they were sleezy, didn't have a chance to ask her why.

Not specifically Youth Hostels, but there are plenty of hotels and hostels.
Get yourself a Morocco Lonely Planet. It gives you a hostel list with prices for every Moroccan city/village.
I travelled for 2 months and never paid over 5 quid for a room.
There is no need for booking. Just walk in.
You better pay them in Dirhams.
Have fun.

Hey there,

You are going to have a good, easy time. There are lots of hostels in Tanger, Fes and Marrakech (though no youth hostels).

The best ones are around 20鈧?per day.

The more luxurious riads though are all fully booked for your time of travel. But no worries... you stumble over the hostels everywhere. Can't book them online though.
