Is Montreal, Canada a good substitute for Paris?

I cannot afford to take my girlfriend to Paris but I was thinking that maybe Montreal can substitute this year. What do you guys think? I know its not Paris but is it still a romantic getaway?

Montreal is very nice and the Vieux Montreal is very romantic. We have lovely parks and there are some great restos. You can also take a side trip to Quebec city.It reeks of history and romance. I wouldn't advise it though at this time of the year unless you enjoy the snow and slush. If you wait 'till the spring you'll have the makings of a great trip.

Yes,because is very beautifully city

Your girlf friend will enjoy the romantic old Montreal and festivals we got here in summer. For sure it's not Paris, but local are friendly with tourism and the night life is cool! Come to visit us !

no way not at all never Paris is Paris Montreal s just a kid friend

No, not really.

To be perfectly frank, Montreal is a poor substitute for Paris but at least, Montrealers aren't as snobbish and arrogant as most Parisians, believe me!

I have been to both cities and much prefer Montreal's warm and friendly atmosphere (despite the typical bitterly cold North American climate November thru March!) but then again, I'm totally biased since I grew up in Montreal.

In your case, considering that you cannot afford to fly to Europe, go ahead and show your girlfriend the hidden splendors of the second largest French speaking city in the world, by all means!

Enjoy!

No, try Quebec

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

NO !!!!

Closest though...

There is no substitute for Paris. Have been to Montreal and really can not be compared at all.
Would you compare London Ontario to London, Uk ??

There we go.

But it decidedly has a different flair, a more unique one, a kind of freedom attached to it, on top or retaining some old Europeans flavours.............but it is still not Europe.

BUT !!!! GEE..Go for it please ! You sound really nice and having thought of that...congrats and really enjoy your holiday in Montreal.

PS: I did like Montreal...I was just saying it had some European flavour but ..not quite..go to Quebec City..

Congratulations on your thoughfulness !

You are right. You and your girld friend will like Montreal. Quebec city is too small. Of course, Montreal is not Paris as Calgary is not Shanghai but...as "substitute" is good and more. Ottawa and and Toronto are not far from Montreal. Variety of food, festivals, shopping, English, French and....more. Montreal is less expensive than Toronto or Vancouver. Nice trip!
