March weather in Montreal ?

still covered with snow, have i got to use snow boots or special suits for the cold ?

Thanks a lot !

That depends on your tolerance to the cold and what time of the month you are going. Unfortunately March is a tricky time for the Northeast. It can be warm (or so us locals would think) or freezing. I am from Vermont, and my husband is from Montreal so I can tell you what I know.

The trick to the Northeast is layers! Pack layers and layers. You will be more comfortable if you have a t-shirt, a sweatshirt or a sweater and a jacket, that way you can keep them all on if you are cold, or remove a layer if you get warm. Make sure your jacket is loose enough to fit over your layers but not gigantic. There is nothing worse than spending a day where you feel packed like a sausage.

Also, depend on quick changes in the weather. It can be 60 one day and -20 the next... and that's in F.... not C... and I'm not kidding.

You will most definitely want to bring both types of shoes for the trip. If it is warm it could be really wet and walking around in cold weather with wet shoes is no fun, and you will probably do a lot of walking while in Montreal. Bring a scarf, hat and mittens, if you don't need them you can ball them up and put them in your pocket.

The good news is... that you probably won't need a special suit for the cold, unless you are going very early in the month, and have no tolerance for the cold at all. Also, if you're trip is close to April you probably won't need to wear as many layers, but still pack them just in case. Being cold during your whole trip could ruin the experience. Either way you will still want sensible shoes for the cold and wet, but normal shoes for when/if you go to dinner... Montreal is very trendy after all. Good luck and stay warm.

It's still winter. You need WATERPROOF boots because the snow is (slowly) melting by then. It should be around -5C to +10C, so whether you think that requires "special suits for the cold" will depend on what you're used to. Some Montrealers (like my sister) will be wearing shorts.

Excellent answer from Madscientist!

Need I say more?

Goddess of Grammar: your sister must be completely nuts!!!

And Lu, since you are indeed Hispanic (and illegal here in Canada), your tolerance to the cold is probably very low so you will need extra sweaters and a very warm jacket or coat for sure!

And don't forget your snow boots, lol!

Good luck!
