Canada Day in Montr茅al?

Do Quebe莽ois in Montr茅al observe Canada Day? Are there any festivities during Canada Day in Montr茅al, or is Canada Day a big holiday to begin with? What kind of celebrations do they have, if they have any at all? We're going there during the Jazz Festival, and we're wondering if we should plan on seeing anything special that day (July 1st). Any response would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Very true!

La Saint-Jean Baptiste (June 24th) is much more prevalent in the French speaking province of Quebec than Canada Day (July 1st) could ever be, believe me!

For us French-Canadians, who cares about Canada Day?

None of my friends and relatives ever celebrate Canada Day, I can guarantee you that!

But we all get a day off work, which can't be all that bad, right?

And in Quebec, school is always out just before June 24th so that the kids don't ever miss out on La Saint-Jean.

Besides, most (if not all!) yearly rental leases begin on July 1st so guess what happens on that day?

I'll give you three guesses buddy, lol!

Yes, there are some festivities... But it is not the same as for the Saint-Jean Baptiste... Ususally, if you go in the Old Montreal, there is a firework for the Canada Day... and in many parks there are activities. But you better check before going. (Internet sites - tourism Montreal will help you)

Sure do...Montrealers are very proud Canadians...They even have a real hockey team...

Canada Day celebrations are rather small potatoes compared to the celebration a few days earlier of St-Jean-Baptiste Day. SJB is also known in Quebec as "fete nationale" or National Holiday, especially among those who wish Quebec to become an independent country.

Canada Day celebrations do happen, but they're smaller are more localized than the St Jean Baptiste ones. Reasons why? Quebec is 'special' and French and therefore celebrates their own Fete National on St Jean Baptiste and Canada Day is also Moving Day in Montreal. Imagine 4% of the population of Quebec all moving on the same day, sound like you've got a lot of time for celebrating?

Not so much no. There is in Ottawa an hour away. I lived in Montreal for a number of years. Ste John Baptiste day is just a few days before Canada Day, and they go all out. Huge celebration and fireworks. The do have a lil bit for Canada Day but I was shocked my first one there. It's really understated.
