Monterrey (visiting or working)?

Anyone have insight/feedback on Americans visiting Monterrey short term as well as working there for a few months?

Monterrey has changed a lot since NAFTA. Many Canadian and American franchises have opened here. The major avenues are very congested during rush hour. The house prices are very high for the size of house you get. This industrial city is surrounded by mountains, so it rarely gets hit by hurricanes. If you have small children there is a lot of primary schools that offer bilingual classes. Regiomontanos are very friendly to Americans; they love going to McAllen or Laredo to do their shopping. I think you'll enjoy Monterrey it is a vibrant city!

I studied there for over a year. Please feel free to email me with any specific questions. As for working there - What I hear, it's somewhat difficult to get a work visa there, unless your company transfers you there. If you are on your own, good luck getting a work visa.

Monterrey is a great city with a long history. There are many expats of all nationalities there and many global enterprises. It has good flight connections to other points in Mexico and the US and a wide variety of housing options.

If you are being transferred there by a firm, make sure you understand what your contract will and will not cover. It is not cheap to live in Monterrey! If this will be your first time living outside the US, talk to other expats, connect with expat organizations in Monterrey, and research on the web. It is usually very difficult to move outside the US and THEN find legal employment.

I've posted some websites below with basic information on Monterrey.

You will love monterrey because is near USA and is a big city we are friendly with Americans and we like people who work.

bye
