Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico?

Does anyone know how it is to live there? How is it to find jobs and a place to live? How much can people make w/o a degree? My fianc茅 finished high school and did not continue schooling. He is a Mexican national.

I am planning to move there Dec. 22nd to be with him.

If he is fluent in spanish and english then it would be best to try and get a job working a front desk in a hotel! there you can make 7000 to 8000 pesos a month (around 650 to 750 dollars) which is not a bad income for mexico with the cost of living! That would be my suggestion and Monterrey has a lot of modern and upper class hotels to choose from!

It happened in Monterrey a long time ago, I met her in Monterrey in old Mexico. Stars, steel guitars, luscious lips as red as wine, broke somebody's heart and I'm afraid that it was mine. It happened in Monterrey without thinking twice, I left her and threw away the key to Paradise. My indiscreet heart longs for the sweetheart that I left in old Monterrey. Life in there is good. You will find fresh northern mexican food instead the american and frozen food...

He may get a good job even if he hasnt got a degree. He should go online and look for opportunities. You may be able to teach english because you are american.

He should try to get involved in politics with a local politic team.

Excellent... I married my Monterrey guy 5 years ago, and we lived quite comfortably... we are currently in the states, but go home about every 4 - 6 months to visit... let me tell you...

How long has he been working at his current job? Mexico has a wonderful program for people who are working to get new houses. Ask him if he has any credit to get housing from Infonavit. (or anyother... I have a beautiful house in Santa Catarina). Please, make sure he does not plan for you to live with his MOTHER! (Or any other relative for that matter!) Our Mexican men are often accustomed to being stuffed in a house with all the other family - and are quite happy about it... ask about the house!)

My husband made about $1000 pesos a week ($100 dollars). (He was a Assembly Line Supervisor with Coflex - others made only $70 dollars a week, but it is still do-able). Ask him if he currently has good credit with Coppel or Famsa... I washed my clothes by hand and had to heat up water on the stove to bathe at first. (If you are willing to do this, and accept it happily as a part of life - you will make him very happy.) But, if he has credit, you can start getting appliances, so that you don't have to endure this! If you have a way to buy USED appliances here and take them down, even better. Appliances cost twice as much there... 3 times if you buy on credit!

Take an electric blanket! He may not let you use an electric heater because "it's too expensive!" or leave on the gas heater at night because "it's too dangerous!" (and, yes, many people die yearly in Monterrey because of gas fumes)... so, if you can just stay snug under your electric blankie all winter, you will do good! Those houses are cold!!

Monterrey has HEB, Walmart, McDonalds, Sonic, Applebees, Chiles, ... so, you can be comfortable buying your American things (they just cost more than the Mexican brand - I always bought the Mexican brand of anything - it works just fine... no need to freak out and take tons of hair supplies from here with you!) A McDonalds hamburger doesn't hold a stick to a Mexican one bought in a small street booth, but some times you crave the familiar!

In my opinion, you do better in this city with a degree, unless you go for telemarketing kind of jobs and stuff.. can't tell you an exact amount of how they pay, but mostly they don't pay as high as they would in the US.


I wouldn't say there aren't any chances of good jobs here without a degree but I think the best paid jobs do require you to have proper licences and stuff, About lifestile it depends where you are planning to live, some places are expensive and others are cheaper, I would recommend you to focus in your security, this city doesn't have huge crime problems like mexico city, but some areas may be quite unsafe

my family is from there, and for them it is pretty easy. Even though some of them did not even go to high school (back in the days), they have great jobs now and earn very good money for what they do [bus driver, factory worker, mechanics, etc.] It's a very great and beautiful city, you're all gonna do great there. good luck

I married a dual citizen a citizen of both US and Mexico. I current live in San Nicolas de los Garza with my husband a city right next to Monterrey proper. Monterrey is made up of 5 seperate cities but together they are called Monterrey much like all the cities in Los Angeles are refered to as Los Angeles.
Monterrey is an Industrial city it is very modern. The traffic is a nightmare at all times of the day. There are alot of plants for many different things that are always hiring , If he speaks English then he can work in a bilingual office and make more money.(there are alot of US contacts that require corraspondance in English.)
Utilities including Gas stations are Gov't controlled but the prices are not bad.They bill in 2 month cycles. My bills are 39 ($3.90 USD)pesos for electric 33 ($3.30) pesos for water and 44 ($4.40) pesos for natural gas. but I too wash clothes by hand or go to the laundry mat as I just moved there 5 months ago and am working on getting things like washer and dryer etc. Appliances are very expensive there. The Electric is the same there as it is in the US 110v and 220V.
The people are frendly and if you need directions you just ask. They gather in the Plazas (parks) at night and talk or play fotbolito (soccer on a basketball court)
Monterrey is growing rapidly and there is alot of housing available. The houses are generally very close together with a park in the neighborhood. I personally love it there.
