Moving to Monterrey tips?

Im moving to Monterrey to go and study medicine. My family is offering me a place to live by myself for a cheap price is about 10 minutes away from the macro plaza. the thing that is freaking me out is living by myself since i never have before. and the other thing is living in another country away from my parents and brothers/sisters i am 18 years old and i find it difficult to move out. but i have already made up my mind about leaving. also my Spanish is getting rusty so I need learn some of the language again and balance things out. Anybody has any tips of living by theirselves, Im pretty young so is there any thing i should be careful about?

I dont have much family on my own other than my uncle in Monterrey. So its pretty much on my own

Tip - don't spend your days staring at the naked statues in the Macro. The library there is awesome!! And, on Tuesdays you can go to the Museum for free. Take route 2 by the bus station (or the metro) and you can get 5 tacos and a coke for $25 pesos - so your money will last. Put additional details saying you need more help and I will tell you more. Why aren't you living with your uncle? Oh - and Morelos is FULL of people your age just chilling - it's pretty cool. OK add more!

Besides I think that the place I might be moving in by myself will be in the same block. So you never know we might be neighbors Report It

I have lived on my own since I was 18 and it is great. Also, I have lived alone in Mexico for over eight years. It is a little difficult to do it in a foreign country but you will learn and grow up fast. Study as much Spanish as possible before you go although you will find a lot of English speakers in Monterrey. I assume that your classes will be in Spanish. The best advice I can give you is to act responsibly and enjoy the adventure. Be careful about inviting people that you don't know into your house. Keep your valuables in a safe and secure place. Most Mexican college students believe in "finders keepers, losers weepers". You will meet a lot of students at school. If you get lonely, invite someone you know well to be your roommate.

i lived in monterrey for a semester but i had a roommate and lived in the dorms. you can get around there without much spanish, since mostly anyone that is educated speaks a little english. since you have spoken spanish before, it will start to come back to you really quickly. i would just be careful about keeping things locked up. don't carry a lot of money on you at one time because cops there are pretty corrupt. you might have to pay them "protection money" once a month. its usually about 300 pesos and the cop that patrols your neighborhood usually asks for it. just give it to him if you don't want problems.

also, make friends with mexicans at your university. they will be a HUGE help if you are ever in a bind and they also know the best places to go on the weekends. if you can, find someone you think is reliable to be a roommate. it's always nice to have someone to split the costs with and makes it a lot safer to have someone know your whereabouts.

other than that, you will LOVE being on your own. you have so much freedom and you will be glad you moved out. it is a bit scary and stressful living in another country at first, but when you get settled in, you will have no problems. i would expect to be homesick at first but the excitement of moving will keep you distracted for a while. all i have to say is that this will be an experience that you won't forget and monterrey is a very modern and wonderful city.

good luck to you!! buena suerte y cuidate mucho!
