Merida Travel ... Worth it?

Seriously considering going to Merida for a trip, is it worth spending money on?

If you want to know whether Merida is worth your time, you should check out http://www.moremerida.info/guide.html . Spend your money and time wisely and remember to have fun!

Is it worth it? Lets put it this way, if you are into culture and art galleries yes, it's worth it. But be warned it's warm/hot humid weather, average temp 91. Rainy season June, July and August.

Enjoy. Have fun

Better in the winter than summer for weather. Not exactly a tourist town but a lot of history and beaches are not far (not the carribean kind)

I suppose it's all personal preference but I really like Merida. There's lots of great colonial buildings and impressive museums. It's said that at one time Merida had more millionares than anywhere in the world and it's not hard to believe looking at some of the mansions. The people are really amazing, super friendly, helpful and very patient with my terrible Spanish.

There is lots to see in the area as well, I think the ruins at Uxmal are spectacular. (as are Chichen Itza) both are less that two hours from Merida. The city of Izamal is fairly close as well, that's been called the city of three cultures, Mayan, Spanish and Mexican - it's very cool and unlike any other place I've ever seen. There's a giant pyramid in the middle of town! And the Spanish colonial buildings there are beautiful too. In area around Merida you will also find many haciendas, some in total ruin and other restored as private homes, bed and breakfast or luxury hotels. They are an interesting piece of history as well.

As for worth spending the money on - I'm not sure. How much does it cost to get there from where you are? I mean if you can go to Paris (for example) for the same money then go to Paris but I do think Merida is a place worth seeing.

Sparks is right - winter is better than summer. The beaches on the gulf coast are nicer in the summer but they are very busy (with people from Merida trying to escape the heat).
