Should I anticipate getting hassled in Mauritius ?

I ask because I have booked a holiday there next month and have been trying to sort out my airport transfers from this end in the UK. So far I have had airport companies, transfer companies and the like trying to organise excursions for me; asking for the hotel details so they can come and visit me at the hotel to arrange excursions.... etc and I never asked for any of that...

To be honest I am now concerned that it's going to be a repeat my my holiday to Egypt which I ended up hating due to the constant pressure to book and buy things which I never wanted, and the people in Egypt just would not take no for an answer.

Please note that there is a difference between being helpful and haranguing people and I'm afraid now I'm gonna experience the latter!

p.s I'm a student and not rich even by western standards!!

It will be nothing like Egypt.

1. You do not need to give any hotel details and I would not do so. The hotel will have many excursions to offer, plus the local tourist board will help you there. just ignore them.

2. The Mauritius people are charming people not aggressive or rude as one may find in Morocco or Egypt. Thank God!

3. contact your hotel to ask them if they have a transfer service running from the Airport to the Hotel. In most cases they have, that a buses will run from the airport to your hotel in any case. Sometimes they are free, and at other times there is a nominal charge.

4. Ignore the excursions offers for now, there will be plenty on offer once you get there.

Also just remember the average Marituan ears less in a month than most ppl earn in an hour here.

Do you have room for me in your suitcase.lol

Mauritius is not like Egypt.. you will be fine

We were in Mauritius a coouple of years ago and found the people gentle and unassuming, some of the nicest folk I have met actually. They keep themselves to themselves and do not seem to resent the fact that we clearly have more money than them. Although we stayed in a top hotel we frequently cycled to nearby villages in the evenings and never felt threatened.

never been so i couldnt tell ye

You'll be fine in Mauritius and lucky for you that your going as I've never been there before. Have fun!

I have to agree with some of the previous answers... the Mauritians are lovely and I think you will have a great time. Check out my panoramic photos taken during a trip last year: http://www.360travelguide.com/results.as...

it won't be as bad as Egypt, but it will happen. When I first got here, the locals thought I was a tourist and used to hassle me on the beach to buy things. They don't seem to do it anymore. Try not to look too much like a tourist and you will have no problems. Act the same way you would at home.
