How did 'selipar Jepun' got it's name in Malaysia?

GH -- Hahahaha...

the japanese used to slap Malaysian with their sandal ...

im from malaysia...so i will answer...when japanese come to malaya(old name for malaysia) the gouvernment declare emergency..so the people of malaya were very poor....so they have created so many things from nature and one of them is selipar jepun...i think thats the how did 'selipar Jepun' got it's name in malaysia

Its got "made in japan" written on it or maybe the brand of selipar has names like Toshiba,Sony,Mitsubishi,Honda,Ogawa etc..

GarisHalus, you're so funny la...

I believe it has something to do with the design of selipar Jepun that looks so akin to the Japanese clogs.

I think when the Japs invade Malaya, they brought down the 'Selipar Jepun' to distribute to the local folks that were captured. Later they used it as a form of 'dera' to those prisoner of war. like GH said, they used it to slap the POW's.

Garishalus, I thought that one is "penampar Jepun".

its made from the plants called 'gipun' ala.... orang bukan dusun mana paham ni....

ok....ok....

that Jepun people use selipar jepun while torturing all the tanah melayu people and borneo people last time

Because the Japan invaded us and not the Germans, if not it would have been 'selipar Jerman'.

or

Due to the brutality and oppression by the Japs that we name it 'selipar Jepun' and it's worn on the feet so we can pijak pijak them la......

i wore sepatu sialan

First and foremost, the design of the so-called Japanese slippers have its own origin. The name of it isn't really of significance as it is a Malay translation for 'slippers' (in English).

The design was (most probably) imported from the Japanese traditional ones, notably the Geta and Zori (http://www.jlifeinternational.com/getazo... )

It is quite a popular design in most 'occupied' territories, which had spread all the way from Indochina to certain parts of Indonesia.

The Burmese have specially designed a 'monks' slippers of the same Geta and Zori style, which was quite light, practical and comfortable to wear. In Malaysia, cost of production was probably lower ---and the common 'Japanese slippers' were made of rubber or foam (during the Japanese occupation, it would have probably been made of wood).

Here is a link for further information on the Geta and Zori:

Good luck!

Actually, the penampar is called Tamparan Gaban..Haha. selipar jepun got its name from this Japanesela.. as the cheapest thing that Malaysian can afford at that time is selipar so they referred it back with the Japanese.. same as Beras Siam where the sources is from Siam..

sebab ianya dperkenalkan di tanah melayu semama penjajahan orang jepang..

agree with garishalus..
