I'm from Russia and I'm going on a long-term internship in KL. I'll spend there 1,5 year. So, please, consider this while answering my questions.
1. Are there a lot of white foreigners living on a regular basis?
2. What are the most popular night clubs among foreigners? Are they glamorous and fashionable? Till what time are they open?
3. What is average salary? (in US Dollars)
4. Is it easy for a foreigner to open a bank account and get debit/credit card? What documents are required?
5. How much an average girl would spend on food per month? If mostly eat at home and dine out 1-2 times a week.
6. How much does a pack of good cigarettes cost? Do they sell Parliament cigarettes in KL?
7. What is Bangsar area like? How far is it from KL downtown? How to reach KL downtown from Bangsar using public transportation? 1) yes, but there are no clubs where whites gather or something, they are quite dispersed. I don't know about Russians, but there is quite a number of Uzbeks especially in Ampang area; they speak Russian. A common place to find Uzbeks are cyber cafes which offer webcam.
2) Zouk in KL. All night clubs are open until 2 am, then they must close and check if there is any police patrol around, some reopen afterwards and continue partying illegally. Zouk hosted some world famous DJs, like Valentino Kanzyani. Discos like Zouk are trendy, but never go to some small Chinese disco because they are simply boring.
3) average salary is around $400-500, but most of Westerners get better jobs
4) you need a passport with a student visa or working permit and some cash to deposit (RM 300 ~ $ 90). Tourists aren't allowed to open bank accounts here. It's not difficult if you have what I told you.
5) around RM 300 ($90) if you can take Asian food. If you're a die-hard Western food fan double that amount.
6) fags cost around $2 per pack. I don't know about Parliament though.
7) Bangsar has all you need but it's a bit expensive. KL has no downtown actually, it's not like a European city, it's chaotic. KL has certain areas frequented by foreigners like Bangsar, Bukit Bintang (both expensive), Kotaraya (cheap, mostly Indonesains, Burmans, Bangladeshis, Nepalese), Petaling street (whites like to visit there to purchase fake items)... NO ONE HAS THE TIME TO ANSWER ALL YOUR QUESTIONS, JUST GOOGLE IT.. i can only answer few questions.
1. YES.. LOTS LOTS LOTS. young and olds too

Here are some of what I know and have in mind:
1. Yeah sure! Some of them also got married here.
2. It depends on what type of music you listen. I'll suggest a few: Zouk, Havana, Hard Rock Cafe, Nouvo, The Beach Club, Ol'Skool and other. They open till 2.00am
3. Average salary depends on your education and experience. No one could answer this question without further details.
4. Banks? We got CitiBank here, the largest bank in the world. No problem for you.
5. What's best staying in Malaysia is the food! You can find it anywhere and easily. It's way cheaper than other places.
6. A pack of Malboro 20's will cost around RM8.40 or USD2.45. We don't have Parliament ciggarettes here. Try Dunhill or Salem.
7. Bangsar is full of clubs and dining places! You'll love it.. it's alive all day long. It's only about 10-15 minutes from KL downtown. Public transport such as buses and taxi are available. Never worry so much , like Nike says Just Do It! 1. Yes, a lot of foreigners in M'sia.
2. Zouk is one of the famous club in KL.
3. Don't know what's your job.
4. Sure, no problem. We have a lot of international banks here.
5. See how much you eat. I only use RM10-15 (USD 5) per day, all dine out at some stalls. Unless sometimes reward myself with nice food.
6. Non-smoker, can't help you. Sorry.
7. Bangsar, popular, nice, great place, a area of fun. 1. Depends to the location itself. E.g. in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Georgetown, Penang. It's not hard to see white foreigners. Malaysia used to be occupied by British & Portugese (in the Malacca) once upon a time. Thus don't be surprise to find plenty of local white westerns.
2. Mostly in KL. Usually the happening hours are after 8-9pm. They can be glamourous or just normal casual hip. But there are some special events when celebrated DJ's or performance are held.
3. Depends on the industry & hands on experience. In IT, most with min.3years experience can get about 2K & above per month.
4. Yes. Usually passport, any identification certificates or you can email to any local malaysian banks like HSBC, Maybank, Public Bank & etc. for further enquiries.
5. Around RM300-RM500. depends to your budget. Sometimes cooking for yourself can be more costly than to purchase for food outside. There are plenty of food which isn't costly. Per meal can be as cheap as USD1-3 only.
6. Not sure.
7. Not that far, but depends on the location & the time e.g. during peak hours - can hv a slight traffic. You can travel using RapidKL (public transport bus).
Hope you'll enjoy your stay here :) Bangsar ... the safest place on earth ... because i'm there ...
