They were employed by the warriors of the bygone days in espionage. Knives and other small, sharp weapons were employed by the women (for example, the kerambit, hairpin, knuckle dusters (yes, it was used as belt buckles), small bamboo shafts, etc.)

And yes, some used the kitchen knives as a defense tools against heavily armored men!

I'm not sure about that. i would have thought that man first had the spear for hunting, a sharp piece of flint as the arrow head, and it would follow that he used the sharp flint for butchering his meat (would that not be a knife?) and perhaps slashing out at anyone who tried to take his meat from him.... not an art-form, just survival. a woman may have been the first person to stab a successful hunter enjoying his kill in the back though!
