I need a fairly cheap craft project from madagascar, africa?!?

my troop is doing the madagascar theme (not the cartoon). we are gonna have all the troops in our area do these for thinking day in girl scouts. so we need something fast, cheap to do at our booth. please help other troops are doing the foods, and other stuff. we though about something with beads, or masks or something or even the flag from there but we need ideas to make one of these happen.

LEMURS

Your troop can do one on the Lemurs
Lemurs are found naturally only on the island of Madagascar and some smaller surrounding islands, including the Comoros (where it is likely they were introduced by humans).

Due to deforestation this beautiful animal is slowly disappearing.
Download info from the web print pictures and shake the world.

TYPE LEMURS, AT GOOGLE, BETCHA YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE.

Madagascar originally was settled by Indonesians, who were followed later by east Africans. The Indonesian influence resulted in a lot of batik cloth made in beautiful designs.

The east Africans brought their own brightly-colored clothing and jewelry made of beans and beads. Stringing different shapes and colors of dried beans on colored string might be a good project. Check Mozambique crafts, too, as they are similar.

Handcrafts sold in the Country include maps and pictures embroidered on plain cotton cloth, handbags woven from different colors of raffia, and, more recently, jewelry made with semi-precious stones found in the mountains.

You could try the exports of Madagascar, which are numerous, but which include coco beans http://www.amazon.com/Madagascar-Artisan... and vanilla.
Here is the flag (easy to reproduce). http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Flag_...

You can get info about lemurs from the WWF http://www.panda.org/news_facts/educatio...

Coloring pages with the flag, map, and lemur would be inexpensive

Check out the site makingfriends.com

They have a of craft ideas and supplies, lots of downloadable stuff, they have specific Africa crafts or you could go with a jungle or rainforest theme craft.

One of my favorites is the paper doll friends section- you can download paperdolls and print them in various skin tones on cardstock- you can also choose to download clothes, hair, etc- you could have material scraps and pictures of native costume or of Girl Guide costume in Madagascar, and have the girls make clothes that looked like national/GG costumes for their paperdolls. You can get pictures of GG in various countries thru the WAGGGS links or other sites and lots of details about Scouts in each WAGGGS country from "Trefoils Around the Wortld"

BTW- Madagascar is one of 5 countries chosen by WAGGGS this year to highlight for Thinking Day, check out the WAGGGS Thinking Day site for links

Here is a link with nice color photos of National Scout insignia- might also make a nice craft or swap idea

I have a dog whose breed is from Madagascar, known as Coton de Tulear!
