Anyone out there visited Madagascar? What's it like and any tips? |
My father lived there for a couple of years and raved about it but I've never been. I haven't actually been there but I've received a brochure from Cox & Kings and an on-line brochure from Audley Travel (both specialists) and it looks amazing. Contact either of these companies for a brochure and you'll see what I mean. i like the film ! I was there two years ago. Saw a dead dog, and an enormous dead rat. Not much else. I have had a life long passion for the country. Everyone returns from it with a far away look and a longing to go back. It is the most amazing place. However, it is huge and everyone's experience will vary. My initial experiences were of towns such as Antananarivo, which is an amazing city with the biggest street market in the world (the Zoma, because the biggest day is Friday, or Zoma), Majunga (very Arab and very safe), Antsirabe (a spa town where you travel about on a pousse-pousse, or human borne rickshaw -- it's the decent thing to do to support the local economy), Nosi Be, the island which is so amazingly beautiful I could hardly believe my eyes (now, fortunately or unfortunately, discovered by the American tourist industry), before experiencing other towns in the south and the bush, where the wild life is so amazing. The people are so friendly, the music is wonderful, the food is fascinating and the scenery is magnificent. Are you planning to go? Great idea! Get this book -- and keep an eye on it, as everyone will want to borrow it! http://www.bradt-travelguides.com/detail... I'm from South Africa and unfortantly I've never been to Madagascar, but many of my friends have and they said its amazing. South Africa's a beautiful country and I'm sure Madagascar is too, Saw the animation movie, heard that Vanilla is cultivated there. Actually I haven't been there but I think it's a nice place and attractive |
