There is one currency in Madagascar with two names and it depends who you are talking to what it is called.

Officially the currency is the Ariary (MGA), it is divided into 5 Malagasy Francs (FMG) or iraimbilanja (ee-RYE-'-mbee-lahn-zah).

Before 2004 the FMG was the official currency though Ariary was still used. The only major change is that now the bills show their worth in Ariary and the Francs are in small print. Before 2004 it was the other way around.

If you go to Madagascar though you will still find many people giving their prices in FMG. Since the very beginning (early 20th century) if they give their prices in French it is the FMG price and if they give their price in Malagasy it is the Ariary price.
