Antananarivo, population 802,000 (1997), is the capital of Madagascar, in Antananarivo province. It's situated in the centre of the island, on a mostly inaccessible rocky height 5000 ft. above the sea-level. It is Madagascar's largest city and is its administrative, communications, and economic center. Antananarivo means "The City of a Thousand" (arivo=thousand). In the colonial period and for some years after independence the spelling Tananarive was used.
