Would you agree that Liverpool's North End and northern suburbs are decidedly more Irish Catholic in ancestry

Consequently, would you agree that the South End and the local population in areas south and east of Liverpool are more Protestant and native English (with some Welsh influence too) in their ancestrial origins?

No I don't agree. Yes Scotland Road was predominantly Irish Catholic, but nearby Netherfield Road was predominantly Protestant. The 12th July Orange parade still starts from Netherfield Road which is definitely in the north of the city.

There was also a large Catholic population in the south end (St Malakies) but I think Liverpool was never as territorial as Belfast or Glasgow, and that is why there is now no problem with religious bigotry here.

Thankfully all that nonsense is behind us, and I have had many friends who have been lodge members, despite being born in the biggest Catholic parish in the country.

yes! scotland road area has always been known as catholic area and the southend proddy!!!!!

Maybe in the past but Its totally mixed nowadays.

Yes. I'd agree. Mainly due the Famine.

Roughly and simplistically yes, though even years ago there was a lot of intermixing. Also there were sizeable contingents of Scots, Chinese, West Indian and many smaller ethnic groups you are not taking into account. Welsh was, I believe, exclusively spoken in the Pownall Square area (near Old Hall Street) well into the twentieth century. Liverpool was the nearest big city to North Wales, hence the title 'the lost capital of North Wales and much of the city was built by Welsh builders.

Religious distinctions are artificial, as a child I was a Prod but my mates were Catholic. We were all 'respectable working class' i.e., south enders, whereas in the north end they stabbed each other for wearing the wrong footie scarf, the grown-ups drank beer from the bottle and north-enders were generally more criminally inclined, as they still are. As you can see when you read the local news.

The north end is the origin of the criminal and anti-social scouse stereotype peddled so profitably by Bleasdale, Russell, Redmond,Tarbuck et al, at the expense of the rest of us who actually lived in the place.

This is why wealthy incomers all live in the south end, particularly Aigburth, don't they.

North enders are much more likely to be racist too; blacks from Toxteth will rarely go north of Kensington if they can help it.
