Apparently there are going to be two displays simultaneously, one to the east of Leeds and one to the west...though this article doesn't say exactly whereabouts...

By train Manchester to Leeds would be around 30 to 40 minutes or thereabouts...no idea what times they would be running on New Years Eve though...

Leeds is gearing up for a New Year's Eve with a difference as the city prepares to usher in 2008 in style. In a change to the traditional midnight fireworks, the spectacular display will this year take place from 5.30pm on Monday 31 December 2007 to give families across Leeds a chance to enjoy the show.

Organised by Leeds City Council, the displays will be set off simultaneously from the east and west of the city giving as many people as possible the chance to watch.

The fun begins earlier in the day with a carnival-style event held around the main retail quarter from 2pm. Street entertainers, crazy characters and stilt walkers will help generate a party atmosphere while there will also be a special pantomime performance of "Cinderella & The Magic Lamp" and an aerial laser light display. The finale of the event will then be the superb fireworks display at teatime.

Leeds City Council Executive Member for Leisure, Councillor John Procter said: "We are all very much looking forward to the events planned for New Year's Eve. We decided to bring the fireworks forward for several reasons, the main one being that a more suitable time means many more children and families will be able to watch the spectacular display."

"Poor weather in recent years has also caused difficulties to the timing of the fireworks at midnight, so the new time together with the celebrations around the shops in the afternoon should really help people get in the mood to enjoy bringing in the New Year in style."

A further attraction people will be able to take in will be the Celebrate Leeds photo exhibition on Victoria Gardens. Due to popular demand, the selection of large-scale photos which formed part of the city鈥檚 800th birthday celebrations in 2007, is to remain in place until Sunday 6 January 2008, for visitors to the city

By Trans Pennine Express from Picadilly it should take around 1hr 20 minutes.
