Is Leeds a good place to live?

Hey all, I'm from Edinburgh and have been considering moving to Leeds, my fiance is from Leeds but has been living in Edinburgh for the past 7 years so things may have changed since then. We went to visit his family a few months back but it was just for a few days and I loved it there but didn't really get to see much. Can anyone give me any advice to help make our decision please?
Thank You!

A lot of things have changed in the past 7 years!
I will give you good points and bad points, I won't be bias towards my city and just give the good points.

Good Points:
Great night life.
Friendly people.
Good atmosphere generally
Very good shopping facilities
Lots of places to visit
Many things to do
Wide variety of people + attitudes, ways of living etc
Little crime in CERTAIN areas - not all

Bad points ( Sorry to people who have live(d) in the areas I am going to mention, I have as well so I can judge them fairly )

Places such as: Seacroft, Gipton, Harehills, Halton Moor, Chapel Town, Chapel Allerton, Beeston, Belle Isle, aren't a good place to live. I have lived in every one of the above and I have had problems in each place.
They have high crime rate, high violence rate, some say it is because the areas are mainly '' council estates '' but I don't think it is just down to that.
Erm I don't think there is any more bad points, if you can't stand students throwing up all over town then Leeds probably isn't the place for you unless you stay in during the weekends.

Before you do decide to move to Leeds, can I suggest you look at a house in each popular area - Killingbeck, Temple Newsam, Colton ( people say it is bad, but I personally do not think it is, more upmarket that most of Leeds. )

Good Luck deciding! Sorry this was so long!

Phew, didn't want to offend anyone!
Ahh Tropical World is amazing, all the butterflys!
The accent is pretty cool =)
Thanks for best answer. Report It

Leeds is amazing , my brother went tot uni there for three years and i loved going on nights out with him, its just the coolest, trendiest most happening place in the world!! waaay better than my uni, my uni dont even have a 24/hr supermarket!

I would guess its the same as any other city in the UK - great in parts, not so good in others. House prices are a good representative of how an area is - and there is a site which I can't remember the name of (Up My Street or something like that) where you can check crime, schools, transport etc etc on line. Good luck.

youve just answered your own question.....you didnt see much, thats because theres nothing to see,its a dump, stop in edinburgh...its a lot nicer.

YOU might like Halifax better

or you could move to africa!

My son moved to Leeds from the Isle of Wight 4 years ago. I love it up there when I go to visit. As with most cities there are areas which are not very nice but the small parts on the outskirts are beautiful. The shopping centre is great and we went into the city at night for a Thia meal and it was wonderful. I have never seen a city other than London which is so busy at night. For me the best part was that one minute you are within the city and the next you are in the most beautiful country side I have ever seen. There is nothing like a walk in the Dales or on the Moors.

I was brought up in Leeds, quite a few years ago, but it has always been very good for shopping, night life, buildings of interest, pop concerts, art galleries, classical music concerts etc
Some areas are not so good but you find that everywhere these days.
Pick where you want to live and enjoy.

YES,

dont know probably big city never been there though

I visited Leeds a few years ago and thought it was a nice place. If I were to live in the UK, it would be one of the places I would consider.

It depends what you want from leeds. It is good in the sense that theres the hustle and bustle, plenty of nightlife, restuarants cinemas shops etc, and nice surrounding areas, with good public transport into the city centre for miles around. If you want to live in the centre then prices are high (which is expected) but most do not seem to be attractive. Student area is more headingley if either are students
. Visited Edinburugh and found that to be much nicer.

Absolutely fabulous place to live. I was lucky enough to be born and raised there but even luckier to now be living in one of the only cities that outshines Leeds, Barcelona!!

Leeds has everything, really up and coming and modern. The lifestyles of my friends who still live there are great (in their 20's) It's a young, lively and trendy place. It's well connected to other cities and is also really close to some of the most beautiful countryside in England. North Leeds is much nicer than across the river (south is a bit dodgy!!) Nah, every city has good and bad but if you are a young couple looking to make a fresh start I don't think you can go wrong there.

a beautiful place as others have said, you have the best of both worlds in your reach City and lovely rustic countryside
my daughter lives there and i get to go there as often as i can .

ive been living in leeds ever since i was born and it has changed alot and i think its getting better especially with all the hotels and apartments being built....i loove it!!

i think you are your fiance should come to leeds...youll have a swell time!!

Good luck with your decision!! xxx
