2 dads and 2 sons went to get some ice cream; they only bought 3 for the four of them, and they all had one complete cup or stick or cone.. How can it be?

There are 3 generations, grandfather, father and son.
3 persons but 2 dads and 2 sons.

you are counting one dad as being one of the sons because it is a generation of three.

2 dads and 2 sons => 1 dad has 1 son, that son has 1 son = 3 people
