How do you get a free up grade in las vegas hotels?

You could try asking, if they have an unoccupied suite they are more likely to upgrade you. In Vegas, the best way to get upgraded is to lose a lot of money though so be careful.

Sheer luck - the hotel doesn't give away it's better rooms for free unless there is no one else willing to pay extra for them and they have no choice but to fill them up with everyone else.
