What is the best and cheapest way to travel from Shanghai to Beijing?

this is funny, you may wonder why on earth a guy from boston might answer this, and i am not even positive of the answer, but a friend of mine from china just told me last week that tolls are so high in china it is cheaper to fly from Shanghai to Beijing. Those are the two exact same cities you are asking about. (insert twilight zone music here) Very strange. Again I dont know if it is true, just wierd that you asked that question and he just told me this.

The cheapest way is to go by train. It's like an 8 hour overnight ride and it will probably be less than $30 USD/pp. Flying is not that expensive since there are shuttle flights to/from each city every hour or so. Maybe $75USD/pp. Buy the tickets in China at the local rail station or travel agency or in advance through a Chinese online travel agency (see below). It definitely pays to know the language or someone who can help you buy the tickets. The ticket counters and travel agents in China are very confusing and you might end up in Tibet somewhere if you don't get the right tickets.

to be completely honest, i dont know how you could go wrong with skateboarding. i mean if you dont have a skateboard it could cost you like 4 yen or something but if you do, its completely free and great exercise, and you could ollie over most of the azns anyways since they are so short
