My baby is Korean from her father and American from me....?

My husband and I have this ongoing talk. He says she's American Korean and I say she's Korean American. Who is right? And as far as college applications in the way future, does she check white or Asian? Thanks!!

What country was she born in? If she was born in the U.S., she is American with Korean ancestry. she is of mixed race and can check both boxes or NO boxes! It is not wise to make such a big deal of this. The big deal about being American is that we are all from someplace else! But we are all Americans. some of us Americans are a blend of 3 or 4 races and nationalities...we need to put aside differences and concentrate on what unites us.

She's biracial, so she's not completely Korean-American OR American-Korean. In order to be a Korean American, you simply need to be a Korean living in America. In order to be an American Korean, you need to be an American living in Korea (not military: really living there).

She is simply biracial: half Korean, half American (White, in this case)

On applications, it depends. Some applications will actually give a spot for "biracial/multiracial". In that case, she should choose that.

Some applications will allow you to check all races that apply. When this occurs, she can check the white AND the Asian box.

Some applications will have an "Other" category. If none of the above are options, then she could choose this (and write it in if there is space).

If it only allows you to choose one option and there is no "biracial" or "other" category, then she could essentially choose whichever she wanted. She may get more opportunities if she chooses "Asian", but if she doesn't look Asian or identifies more with "whiteness", then she could choose "white/caucasian".

If you are in the U.S., you would say Korean American or simply American. Everybody in America emigrated from someplace else aside from the Native American Indians.

As for the college applications, she should check Asian because there are many more scholarships and grants for minority students.

Ginny Jin: your wisdom is reaching epic proportions following this answer and the Christmas one. I truly appreciate your comic relief.
Edit: I'm with you on agree to disagree.
But, I don't give you a thumbs down for every answer. I only give thumbs down when I see a stupid answer and this one and the Christmas one definitely qualified; so for those two, yes, I did.
However, I receive up to 6 thumbs down on all of my answers from Wigi's multiple Yahoo accounts.

(Is your baby's father native Korean or an American Korean himself. That might make a difference.)

However, really it would be up to you because there are no rules. If it was me I would say American Korean, simply because A comes before K in the alphabet and is easier to say. Only for that reason.
As for race, she's biracial or mixed race.

Edit - v-man. Agree to disagree. I'm already aware you give me a thumbs down for every answer I give regardless.

If she was born in Korea make sure you register the birth with the american embassy. This way she can get a US passport.
Otherwise it really doesn't matter. American Korean refers to an American citizen who immigrates to Korea. Korean American refers to a Korean citizen who Immigrates to the US. With babies they are simply multi racial. I say multi because unless you are native american you are not of the american race. There is no American race.

If she was born in the U.S., I would say "American-Korean."
If she checks off that she's Asian for college applications, she will get more grants, financial aid, scholarship oppritunities, and so on.
On my college application & student loan paperwork, I always check off that I'm Spanish (and I am), even though I look white, and it gets me nearly double the grant amounts as compared to if I checked off being only white.
It sucks that it has to be that way, but use it to your/her advantage if it means getting ahead.

where was she born?
if in korea, then she's korean american
if in america, then she's american korean

and college apps...i think (not sure) that you check all that applies, so check both white and asian
