Is it safe for a non-Korean speaking lady to roam the streets of Seoul alone?

How's the crime rate in Seoul? How safe is it for a lady who can't speak and read any Korean to travel and sightsee alone in the capital Seoul?

How many days is sufficient to cover Seoul? Any must-visit attractions?

Safety is not an issue you will be fine. Seoul is a very safe city,
children walk the streets alone. I wouldn't let my children walk the city without supervision but it seems to be the case in Seoul.

Here are some attractions
Visit KyoungBukKung and the hidden garden. they are very close and you can see both in one day.

There is also a Folk Village in Suwon, 20 miles south of Seoul, this would be a one day trip and most hotels provide transportation or have a bus that services several hotel. You'll get a taste of Korean Culture here. If your hotel doesn't offer transportation go to the Hamilton Hotel in Iteawon and catch the bus.

You can do the same if you'd like to visit PanmunJang, (DMZ). This is also a one day trip as it is about 40 miles north of Seoul.

There is an Art Museum in KangNam near which usually has world class exhibits.

If you are outgoing and want to meet some foriegners and just chat in english. Go to Gecko's in Iteawon, right across the street from the Hamilton. 3rd floor I think.

What most Japanese come to Seoul for is the shopping. If you go to one of the Markets, NamdaeMun or TongDaeMun
you can get some good deals. But to get the best deals you have to go after midnight. Again it is safe but if you know someone who speaks the language you'll get better deals.

The electronic market near YongSan you can visit during the day if you're into that sort of thing. Don't expect any deals here. High end audio comes at a price in Korea.

If you are real adventurous you can walk from the Hamilton in Itaewon all the way up to Seoul Tower. Where they have a revolving restruant. The food is not good here though. If you have a pretty good budget and want a good view of Seoul go to the top of the 63 building, the food is expensive but 1st rate. There is also an Italian restruant in the World trade tower in Koex that has a great view and good food.

Don't forget to try the local food and if possible drink in a pojangmaja (tent/bar).

Very safe if you are refering to rape or mugging. The crime rate against foreigners is very low, as well as against their own nationals. English is the second language in Korea, however most of the older generation in Korea still hasn't adopted English. Many taxi drivers there speak some beginner English; as well as in every subway station in the central Seoul has an English interpreter. Check out Namsan Tower in the Yongsan district, the Yeiudo district (this is an Island connected by highway in the Han River, Seoul Grand
National Park, Gangnam district (everybody speaks English in that area, Dongdaemun shopping district, as well as many Palaces in the Seoul area.

Take a walk on the Han River, there is a sidewalk that covers the distance from the western portion of Seoul to the eastern and on to the ocean.

If you want to stay at a hotel that speaks English well, go to the ones in Gangnam or Itaewon if it's too pricey.

Yes, you'll be fine. (Most Korean people are eager to practise their English anyway)

I went for 5 days (What is sufficient. How long is a piece of string. That depends on the type of tourist you are. lol x)

Olypmic Park. Lotteworld.The markets.

One tip - Make sure you know the full address and telephone number of the place you are staying written down (I got lost in Prague once and didn't have the full return address so was going round in circles for two hours, as a last resort if you did get lost you could show it to a taxi driver), take a map, a guidebook, mobile phone, sufficient money, fluids - plenty of water.

As far as I know, Korea is pretty safe and the crime rates are pretty low... But you might still want to be on your guard after all, you can never be too sure... You should visit the Han river. If you like to take time... It should at least take you 5days(more or less...)

Tip:you should at least know a little words to get by....

Seoul isn't a playground. Bustling streets are fine at night, of course, but isolated patches in the city after dark can be unfavorable. There are the rare muggers and sneak thieves, but no need to worry a lot at all (Some men tell women when they're saying goodbye after a date, "don't walk into a dark alley." It's supposed to be affectionate. It's good advice.)

Otherwise, it'll be fine for a lady as long as she knows basic conversational or vocabulary skills to get by fairly easily. Be sure to visit Kyung Bok Gong, Myung-Dong, In-Sa Dong, Gang-Nam, and the Life Building.
