Will these places be open for retail?

- friend going there during this period, around 7,8,9,10 Feb and wonder if these places are open,
1) Sinchon
2) Meongdong
3) Namdaemun
4) Coex Mall

Most of the places you've mentioned will close only on the 7th. The Lunar New Year holiday always includes three days. The middle of the three days is the main holiday (or the Lunar New Year's Day). This year that middle day is on the 7th.

Since it sounds like you are planning a schedule, I would plan on seeing palaces on that day because they won't be closed. Many locals even go to the palaces on that day as well. That might be also be a good day to go to Jogyesa (the main Buddhist) Temple.

Also, Insadong is a great place to wander and peruse Korean art and culture. Insadong is a great place to buy gifts.

Don't forget the Van Gogh exhibit if they like that sort of thing. It is here in Seoul through early March.

Yes they will be open. Travel will be a bit of a pain due to the holiday and motel room rates will sky rocket.
