The Korean Man?

Ok I need some help figuring out Korean people in general without stereotyping. The older Korean people are very quiet and polite as far as I can tell. But what about the younger Korean man? Why do they have such bad tempers and want the woman to do everything for them? Why do they drink so much also? I have met some really nice ones and they are extremely flirty but they always ask me my race and they usally say that it's a good mix? lol. I am not Korean/Asian or white and I know this can be a problem for many Korean parents? Also, what is up with the gambling? This is just what I have seen from Korean men, let me know.

I'm a foreigner with several years experience living in South Korea. Because of my job, I have interacted with thousands of Korean men between the ages of 20 - 35. I will give you generalizations from my experiences in professional (at work), social (at clubs, bars, restaurants, etc.) and general public situations (out on the streets, subway, etc.).

1) Bad tempers - this is mostly a product of the environment --heavy traffic, high population density and long work hours. I wouldn't generalize that they have bad tempers except when they are drunk.

2) Want women to do everything for them - make no mistake about it, Korea is still a man's world (this is slowly changing). The Confucian mindset still exists. One thing to observe is the divorce rate skyrocketing (www.nso.go.kr). Women are no longer willing to put up with the cheating (room salon women), drinking and disrespect that the previous generations of women endured.

3) Heavy drinking - this is absolutely true. Some say it's because of stress at work and some say it's just the culture. I agree more with the latter. This partially explains the urinating and vomiting on the streets. When people go back to work on Monday, they are skipping over piles of vomit in downtown areas.

4) Mixed race people - Korean men prefer Koreans.

5) Social skills - the men in their early 20s are inept at communicating with women. It could be because of the all mens schools that they attend. They just don't have any skills.

6) Jealousy - Korean men hate to see foreigners with Korean women. They usually won't do anything except give nasty stares and gawks. If they're drunk and in a group, sometimes they will call the woman some bad names. Rarely does it get physical. Even drunk Koreans are too cowardly to do this. You see more and more Korean women with foreign guys these days, so this will always exist.

7) Gambling - There aren't many places for Koreans to gamble in Korea, so I haven't noticed any problems.

8) Smoking - many men smoke and it usually begins during the mandatory military service.

Most Korean men I know don't have bad tempers, they may be more impatient than others, but that's because they're hard-working, responsible people. Women are treated with respect and have equal power (if not more than their partner in the household.) The thing is, they will insist on being the provider for the hous, and will not stay at home, even if the wife could make more money. Since he is the provider, he will expect the woman to do her share by doing housework. If she worked, too, then the man does his share of chores. They drink a lot because of the cold weather and only socially. It's customary and good for business. There are very few real alkies. They don't drink too much, and women drink just as much (in proportion to their capacity to do so.)The same is true with gambling. It's not a problem with them, but of course you can't generalize.

I live with a community of Korean people in Slovakia (there is a big car factory here where they work). So possibly they are not typical Koreans since they are expats, mostly married couples in their twenties and thirties.
The men, particularly my husband (just kidding), can have quick tempers but in terms of drinking, gambling, I've never noticed that. In fact quite the opposite. The ones I know go to church every week and are totally against that. Korean men like consistency and uniformity. My husband leaves post-it notes reminding me to do stuff. What they don't like is public displays of affection from their loving wives.

How can you want an answer without stereotyping while givig a bunch of stereotypes?

In my opinion, the current generation of Korean 20 somethings are spoiled rotten. They did not experience Park Jung He, were too young to understand the democratization process, and except for a couple of years in the late 90's have always lived in a booming economy.
To top it off, the Korean style of raising children is extremely indulgent. Korean mothers cater to their childrens every need.
I went home with a Korean friend one time to each lunch. No one else was home when we got there. He called his mom and told her the deal and the next thing we know the lady from upstairs came down and cooked for us. When she left his only comment was that she had not made enough.
As far as their comments on it being a good mix, that means that they think you are cute.

Ignore them if they make u sick!

one advice don't marry a korean guy......unless he's very independent, kind, loyal and will do anything for you then you go girl. But if not, then just don't!!!!!!!!
