Taxi Drivers and Irresponsible Driving Habits?

I have been previously told that Taxi Drivers here in Korea are some of the worst drivers because the company they work for pays them a bare minimum salary for driving. The company also requires the drivers to turn in W60,000 at the end of their shift, regardless of what shows on the Meter. (This does not include independent drivers)

So basically, anything over the W60,000 the driver turns in, the driver gets to pocket themselves; anything under W60,000 the driver must make up for out of their own pockets.

Can anybody here in South Korea confirm this, or provide a knowledgeable answer?

Taxi drivers who are not "Gae In" (individually owned) recieve a monthly salary of 700,000 won and whatever extra money is given other than the meter. If they have a clean driving record for 7 years they can become a Gae Yin driver, and buy their own taxi. Only citizens of South Korea can be these, not foreigners. If you can read Korean always get the taxi that says Gae In. They usually drive nicely and care for their car. If the car you see is yellow and beat up with a phone number on it, stray away from that.

It's the same in Japan. The first day I arrived in Tokyo, I took a cab to Ropponggi hills and almost died before I got there.

True. Not all but most taxi companies adopet that system. I heard W75,000 for day time W50,000 for night time. It is all because of the company does'nt trust the driver. I saw some driver not turing on the Meter for short distance and say I earned some for lunch!. That's why Korean taxi drivers are called crazy ones.

I have never heard anything regarding this... but I assume that there must be different systems, depending who you drive for. (because some taxis are most expensive, or slower drivers, etc0

Please check with the taxi drivers' unions.
