Have you noticed Koreans appearing in more films and TV shows?

Even five years ago if you saw a token Asian in an American show it would be a Chinese person. Now it seems like Koreans have become the new tokens... although they are often still played by Chinese people. Do you think this is good? Bad? Indifferent?
How long until Koreans actually get to portray themselves?

I think it's cool. In the 90s, the only Korean face on TV or film was Margaret Cho.

Now there's Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Sandra Oh, Grace Park, John Cho, Rick Yune, and James Kyson Lee. Plus you have Korean stars cast in major hollywood movies, like Rain in "Speed Racer", or Lee Byung Hun, who was just cast as Storm Shadow in the GI Joe movie.

And they do portray themselves, for the most part- at least on TV. Or at least I haven't seen a Chinese or Japanese play Koreans in some time, other than on Gilmore Girls. The Korean parts on "Lost" are always played at least by a Korean American.

Indifferent

they're popular now because they have nukes.

havent noticed

Meh, what can you do if they don't cast Koreans as Koreans. Same thing with real Mexicans in Mexican roles- they seem to be played by Italians and Puerto Ricans.

does it even matter? if i started seeing more germans polish french hispanics japanese or any other ethnic group in shows or movies does it matter? even one bit at all? NO :D

I've met a ton of Korean families in my area and the Korean sector of our population in America is growing as is the African American and Hispanic. Let's face it - those with European heritage will no longer be the majority in our country in about 20 years. I think having them appear in films is great. I also think that in 50 years - there will be very few Americans who are a pure race of any kind. If we're all honest - most of us today are not purely European even if we look like it. My kids are 1/8 Sioux Indian - but they look 100% Scandinavian. Yeah - let's have representation in movies and films that is closer to the mix we have in the population. The sad thing is that in about 100 years - I think we will begin to lose many of the specific racial traits that we find in different people groups today. That's the only sad thing. Once you mix up all the genes on earth so that the people groups are not separated we'll end up with a one world race kind of thing where everybody looks very similar.

I believe there is nothing bad with it. As long as the Koreans have the talent, then why not?
I think it won't be long and the Koreans would be able to shine brighter. You see in South East Asia and in other American states Korean TV shows and movies are much welcomed, like "One Million Roses", "Full House"' "Stairway to Heaven"' "Hotelier"' and many others. There are also Korean artists very well-known now worldwide like Rain, Song Hye-Kyo and Choi Ji Woo.

In America? Not in your or my life span.

Who owns major part of Walt Disney? Asian country. I believe it is Sony.

Hispanics were token actor during WW II when all Anglo Saxon males were at war. After the war they were again replaced by white Anglos.

Blacks began as token also but NAACP has had lot to do with forging through the red tape to get more and more Black actor into film.

The good or no good is that children today will grow up with a different image of Dr. Doolittle.

That's progress I'm told.
