Tourist Visa?

I'm a US citizen who would like to stay in Korea for at least several months while my boyfriend is deployed there with the army. How long am I able to stay with a tourist visa? Would I be able to get a visa extension? Does anyone know the requirements?

without a visa, you can stay for 30 days. with a c-3 visa (short term visitor) you can stay for 90 days. i don't know how many times you can extend that, but you'll probably have to leave the country to get another visa when it runs out. many folks just do a same-day or overnight trip to japan (fukoka and osaka are popular cities for this) to get another visa from korea. if you go to the korean embassy website, they'll give you all the official info, forms, and instructions, and there might be a longer visa option. Here's the embassy's English website, look in the menu on the left side under Consulate and click on the Visa link.

If you've got $$$ and don't need to work while you're there...enjoy your trip! But if you do need funds and want to stay there for a year and you have a Bachelor's degree in anything, you might consider getting an English teaching job there. They'll usually pay for your plane ticket and housing. But if you go that route, DO YOUR HOMEWORK cuz there are ALOT of pitfalls to avoid!! It can be awesome, or it can be hell.

A visa is not required for a US citizen to enter Korea for 30 days or less. For a 3 month stay, apply for a tourist visa ... i.e. -

hallo,
Visa is not required for US tourists staying for up to 30 days
For extended stay:
- Passport with at least 6 months remaining validity.

wives do it all the time.....get your boyfriend to hook you up with the pear blossom cottage....talk with the wives already there.....most all get together and do a morning trip to japan and return in the afternoon...or overnight by last flight out...first flight in....really simple....and you can do it for 90days at a time.......
