Does south korea show american movies?

sorry if this is a stupid question but i was just wondering if korean movie theaters show american movies?

Do you mean on t.v. or in the theatres?
In Seoul, there is a MegaBox or something like it in every neighborhood. There is a law that guarantees that only a certain percentage of foreign films can be showing at one time, to protect the Korean filmmaker and guarantee access to Korean films.
Western films are shown in both Korean and their native languages at different show times.
On t.v. here, you have 2 choices: satellite dish or AFN. (armed forces network) You do NOT have to be in the service to get AFN. I have both because they are cheap in Korea. I pay about $20 per month, each. (at home in Detroit, I paid over $50 per month for basic cable)
There are plenty of stations in english, but usually showing the WORST of American television: Biggest Loser, The NAnny, etc. But you can get Oprah, Survivor and The View. AFN shows those, but you have to put up with these really awful "servicemen reminders" about curfew, being a good neighbor, etc.
Koreans must love CSI. At any time of the day, there is an episode of one of hte CSI's playing. IT drives me crazy.
My daughter watches SEsame Street , Disney and PlayhouseDisney here, but there are a lot ofAsian cartoons involved that do not show up in the states. And they focus on Disney Asia. (Hong Kong and Japan) IT is actually more interesting and educational for her anyway.

definately. they have their own set of cable just like us, and have their version of mtv with korean/american movies.and other shows as well like oprah...etc...ya know...and yes their theaters show american movies...

I'm sure they do. I know for a fact Simpson is, because the animation is drawn in Korea.

Everything Dawn V said is right. Just two points of discussion: About two years ago either they changed the law about foreign films or they were talking about it. I remember because I was in a Korean university at the time and it was a huge discussion. The Koreans generally felt the law should remain and I felt that if they ditched the law Korean movies would have to improve due to market forces.
The other thing is if you like AFN watch it now, before it goes away. The programming on AFN is practically free to the military as long as it is used for military purposes. The Korean cable companies are pirating the signal in order to broadcast it. This means that US production companies are losing money because they are losing markets. The companies have pressured the military who is pressuring the ROK government to crackdown on the pirating.
We will see what happens.

It is not a stupid question. My answer is Yes, Korean movie theartres show American movies.

Yes they do. They show most of the well viewed movies with famous actors. Even if the actors in the movies are not famous, as long as it's a movie of some out importance, it'll will be played with subtitles.

Dawn V's answer was pretty thorough, I'm just not sure about the different languages at different times part. I think except for children's movies, they're not big on dubbing, so the movies will be in English with Korean subtitles (at least any American movie I'd ever seen in a theater there was). Only problems are if there is some other language spoken in the movie...the Korean subtitles might override the English subtitles on that part (like in Lord of the Rings when they're speaking fairy-talk :p) and you might miss that part. Other problem (minor? major?) is that they cut the movies...I don't know what the censors are looking for, but I've heard their cuts can get really annoying. But maybe you'd have to see a movie twice, in Korea and outside Korea, to notice? So yes, you'll be able to see Hollywood movies there, just maybe nothing good~~ :p If you're lucky, you might find a Korean movie with English subtitles in a theater, but I only know of that happening for Taegukki (Korean war movie), and that might be only for particular showtimes. And with DVDs, you'll likely get at least English subtitles for any language movie you pick, though if you use a DVD player made for a different region (like North America, for example), it might cause problems trying to play Region 3 (or whatever Korea's region is) DVDs. I use VLC Mediaplayer on my laptop to get around that hassle.
