Get Vonage. I pay a base rate of about $25 and get free long distance to anywhere in the US and a good number of other countries. You can also get a number that is local to anywhere in the US that you want, so it is possible for the people in CT to call you for free as well.

But, uh, make sure to put me down as having referred you so I can get my two free months.

Not sure of an extact price (will depend on how you will be calling back to the states) but I would suggest getting a phone card.

Check out international pre-paid phone cards. There are some really good ones out there as well as rip offs. Clerks at convenience stores that sell these usually sell enough to know which ones to steer away from (customers complain to them and they can't do much about it).

Using Skype, I called from Colombia to Texas for 2 cents per minutes. It's an online messenger-type program similar to AIM and Yahoo! Messenger, but more big companies use and trust it.

The internet sucked though. I'm sure Korea and all their online gaming has vastly superior internet.

if your calling to and from a normal land line and have a computer with the net then try www.jajah.com you might be able to get it for free

you actually don't have to use phones anymore. install skype or yahoo messenger and you're good to go.

trivia: south korea has the fastest internet in the world.

so why bother with phones.

just a word of caution though. koreans eat dogs... like a lot.

join skype and if you call from your PC to a land line it will cost only few cents check it out skype.com

Any of the American VOIP services will work there, too, as long as you have broadband. I used Vonage for the year that I was there. It's just like having a regular landline phone. You get a regular account just like you would if you were stateside and you can make and receive unlimited calls to the US for a flat rate of usually between $20 and $25. For the person calling you from the states, it's just like they called a regular US number. I was really happy with it. If you go with VOIP, get the equipment before you leave because some of them won't ship to an overseas address.

I live in Seoul, and I use Vonage.

We use calling cards on our cell phones.
We get a 400 minute card for 22 000 won.

Calling from US is cheaper. My family bought cards online, and used pins that were emailed to them.
Here's one site with calls for 2.5 cents a minute from US to Korea.

Use Skype.com. I currently live in South Korea and am making calls to New Jersey for 2 cents a minute to a landline. It gets even better if the other person also has Skype - then your calls are FREE! Many English teachers at my hagwon use Skype to call their relatives in the USA, one of them is from MA, for free. He uses a webcam that comes with his laptop. Unfortunately, my family isn't too computer savvy so I'm going to have to pay the 2 cents a minute (which is totally affordable!) to call a landline or mobile phone in the USA. The headset I needed for my laptop cost me 6,000 Won at the local supermarket - approx $7.50. If your computer already comes with a microphone and webcam, then you're all set! Good luck!
